8 Christchurch bar, café and restaurant courtyards for enjoying the spring sun
Ooh that sun is nice, isn't it? The jerseys are coming off and all of a sudden we're looking for some outside space to spend time in. Cityscape's got you covered with our pick of eight sunkissed courtyards perfect for soaking it up with a coffee, meal or cheeky bevvy.
1. Cellar Door
Not just any courtyard, Cellar Door sits on the edge of the quad in The Arts Centre so you can have a glass – or a specially-selected 'wine flight' – surrounded by a bit of beautiful Christchurch history.
2. Aikmans bar & eatery
With a retractable roof, Aikmans' outdoor seating is perfect for any weather. It's especially good to gather around the leaners with a cold pint on a warm day.
3. Dux Dine
Grass! Shrubberies! Delicious seafood with a glass of white wine! Dux Dine's back yard has it all. Try the delicious pale ale beer-battered fish or Akaroa smoked salmon pizza.
4. No.4 Bar & Restaurant
Get al fresco and enjoy a spot of live music at No.4 Bar & Restaurant's outdoor dining and drinking area. We recommend getting stuck into the wicked cocktail menu.
5. Sign of the Takahe
If you want a grassy garden experience in the fresh Port Hills air, then this is the spot for you. After your meal, coffee, or particularly excellent dessert, take a stroll around the sunny garden to find outstanding views of the city.
6. Under the Red Verandah
Linwood's best-kept secret is Under the Red Verandah, a quirky café with a big stony courtyard out back that's always humming. The cabinet food is amazing, and the menu's big focus is big brunch.
7. Mona Vale pantry
Part of the historic Mona Vale Homestead and Gardens, this restaurant has a tranquil outdoor setting that feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of Fendalton Road.
8. Untouched World Kitchen
Untouched World Kitchen's native garden has the perfect mixture of warm sunny spots and fresh shade. Enjoy some of the house-made vegan and gluten free treats while you listen to the birds sing in the trees.
