Do it. Yes, you. It’s time to shape up, and Cityscape has some ideas that will have you thinking about fitness in a whole new way.
Make a change
As well as pumping iron and hitting the treadmills, you need to take care of your nutritional and fitness education for an optimal lifestyle balance. The philosophy at Flex Fitness Riccarton is ‘change begins here’ – and the team go the extra mile to make sure it doesn’t feel like a big commercial gym. The facility has all the gear you’d expect; top-of-the-line equipment; and spaces for cardio, weights, functional movement, stretching, rehabilitation and group fitness.
The big difference here is Flex Fitness is managed so it’s never overcrowded and you won’t have to wait ages for the equipment you need. It’s got a relaxed atmosphere and green plants throughout to match the friendly vibe of the team and gym members. And to top off your workout, you can always hit the in-house smoothie bar to recharge. Membership gives you access to all 27 Flex Fitness gyms nationwide.
Find your centre
One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to yoga, so you’ve got to find the style that suits you. Grassroots Yoga & Health is a purpose-built yoga studio that is 100% about yoga. The studio has classes to cater for all stages of life, including Yoga 1 (covering the foundations of yoga), Yoga All Levels (for a good mix of skills), Yoga Tapas (for an extra bit of intensity), Yoga Restore (to heal) and Yoga Nidra (for deep bliss and guided meditation). The team also offer classes that address the physiological needs of Prenatal Yoga, Seniors Yoga and Gentle Yoga. Each teacher has their own style so you can find the guide and yoga that suit your personality and needs, and grow with them.
Moving your body, your way
Movement, strength and stability practices enable you to experience greater ease, fluidity and stability in yoga and day-to-day movement. By looking at each system and layer of each unique person, MoveWell’s yoga therapists can help you identify physical, mental and emotional factors that influence wellbeing, and take steps to improve them.
Yoga therapy is an individualised whole-person approach to support people with movement restriction, pain, recurrent injury, muscular and postural imbalance, dysfunctional breathing, anxiety, stress, sleep issues, and more besides. This approach can reveal persistent or historical influences that can be overlooked by other approaches to physical therapy, pain, or stress management. Engage one-on-one or in a small group therapeutic yoga class, where safe, progressive practices that can help day-to-day movement and wellbeing are integrated with yoga.

Upskill to upgrade your fitness regime
No matter how often you go to the gym, at the end of the day what you eat will have the biggest effect on your health. Cooking is not difficult, but it is so much easier with a few basic skills and an underlying understanding of how to choose complementary flavours. You can walk away from a Riverside Kitchen cooking class with an arsenal of fantastic recipes. Getting a handle on new ingredients and techniques can bring a whole new range of flavour to your cooking repertoire that saves you having to eat out to explore a variety of foods. The social side of cooking is also important. Cooking classes are a new, healthier option for spending time with friends and meeting new people – focusing on interactive fun instead of drinking alcohol.
Training at the limit
If you want to take your performance training to the limit and get better results in a shorter time, take a turn in Vertex Altitude’s altitude training facility. It’s essentially a gym studio with a Perspex wall, through which the Vertex team can observe you and control your environment while you work out on treadmills, spin bikes, ski ergs, and other equipment. By altering the oxygen percentage and temperature, they can simulate training at high altitude – even as high as 5400 metres above sea level. It’s the only facility of its type open to the public in New Zealand, and can be used to increase EPO and red blood cells, speed, strength, endurance, lung capacity and aerobic performance. Mountaineers can also use the facility to prepare and acclimatise for mountain ascents.

Clean and green performance eating
Eating vegan has changed dramatically over the last five years, and with food box services like Green Dinner Table it's easy to get all the nutrients (and protein!) you need. Protein may be the hot topic, but far more Kiwis are fibre-deficient and that’s where plants shine. The protein in a plant-based diet comes from the amino acids in plants – where did you think the animals got it from? Green Dinner Table owner Chris Kappely has been passionate about working out for the best part of 15 years. Previously protein obsessed, he has now been vegan for nine years, owns a gym, and has never felt better. Green Dinner Table is a great way to expand your comfort level and add variety when including plant-based meals in your schedule.
