Style in Victoria Street: Checking out Man About Town
Victoria Street has had a proper revamp with shops and restaurants bringing buzz back to this once bustling thoroughfare. Cityscape drops by to check out the new kid on the block, Man About Town.
Store owner Sharon Biddle says nostalgia brought her to establish Man About Town in this sweet location. “As a very young child in Canterbury, I remember that Victoria Street was such a cool street. Everyone used to stroll down and look at all the different shops. I mostly remember the hat shop, and imagined myself in them.
"I feel that the street is coming back to that. I would l love to see Victoria Street be what it once was. The place that was close enough to walk to and be just away from the crowds.”
Sharon has manifested menswear into a ready-to-shop stop in the city. Opened May last year, Man About Town is filling a need. Sharon' background is in women's retail, and for years she had been hearing from men who were asking for a change.
“There was really a desire to have something different in menswear that was more middle-of-the-road in pricing. Taking my husband shopping throughout the years was eye-opening, and I knew that I could create an experience for men that was both rewarding and stylish. Man About Town has been going strong for a little over a year now with business increasing as we welcome travellers and events are back on again."
This winter, the seasonal stock is all about man-ssentials. Layers of merino, knit sweaters, business socks, shoes and a plethora of leather accessories including belts and Pierre Cardin wallets.
The biggest sellers right now are Joe Brown shirts and blazers, Sharon says. Jeans are seeing a huge fashion resurgence and Blend Jeans are the most sought-after items in store. “Blend Jeans fit everybody and are really comfortable. Blend chinos as well. People just love them,” she says.
“I want men to be comfortable to come in and shop. We host private events and clients can book sessions to work one on one with me to be styled without the distractions of the day or other customers. They can focus on their personal fashion and achieve what I want all of my customers to achieve: look good, feel good.”
