Bank it in the belly to save Ōtautahi's hospitality assets

Bank it in the belly to save Ōtautahi's hospitality assets

Three Boys Brewery’s Ralph Bungard wants us to think about catching up on dining out to save our city’s iconic hospo scene. Here’s one for you: A customer walks into a bar. “I’ll have 12 starters, 12 mains, 12 desserts and 24 pints of beer please, waiter.” “Oh, are you expecting company?” The waiter retorts. “No, it’s just me today,” says the customer, “I didn’t manage to make it out much in the last couple of years and I’m just catching up!” A most unlikely scenario, right? And not even a funny joke! At the heart of the sentiment though is the guts of why hospitality and all those peripheral to it are among the hardest hit in these times. I’m not saying that other businesses are finding our new Covid world easy. Far from it. But the difference for hospitality compared with, say, painting your house, is that your house...

Start gathering your spare change, Christchurch, because Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival is back on our calendar for April. Review: Little Shop of Horrors at The Court Theatre

Review: Little Shop of Horrors at The Court Theatre

We’ve all been there, right? There you are, sweeping the floors of a down-and-out florist shop in the worst part of town when a sudden eclipse of the sun brings a Strange and Exotic plant into your life, bringing fame, fortune and questionable moral choices along with it. If you don’t relate to that scenario, don’t worry: The Court Theatre’s production of cult musical classic Little Shop of Horrors will take you there. It’s bursting with energy, irresistible characters, bopping tunes, and is the exact injection of fun you need in your life. Seymour Krelbourn is the unlikely hero of this B-horror-turned-musical-comedy, a broke and awkward florist’s assistant who has a secret crush on his co-worker, Audrey, and a mysterious plant that he’s dubbed Audrey II. The unusual horticultural species soon brings throngs of spendthrift customers to Mushnik’s Florist, but in the meantime Seymour has discovered what food it prefers, and...

SailGP bringing speeding, foiling catamarans to Christchurch in 2023 and 2025

SailGP bringing speeding, foiling catamarans to Christchurch in 2023 and 2025

It's good news for sailing fans: SailGP will bring its brand of adrenaline-filled racing to Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour for two seasons in 2023 and 2025. We were all a bit bummed when SailGP was forced to cancel its event planned for January 2022 due to Covid-19, but now the international sailing outfit have sweetened the deal. In partnership with ChristchurchNZ, SailGP will now be bringing four world-class sailing events to Aotearoa from 2023-2026, alternating years between Christchurch and Auckland. The two events are expected to bring more than 11,500 visitors to Christchurch. “Having this extended agreement supported by central Government is a huge advantage for the city," said ChristchurchNZ’s GM Destination and Attraction Loren Heaphy. "It gives Christchurch more certainty because SailGP now has priority access to New Zealand, as well as unlocking more funding and expertise to help deliver the events. This is also a great opportunity to partner with...

Summer festivals and gigs you won’t want to miss in 2022

It’s on, Cityscapers: summer is officially here, and we are officially pumped for some toe-tapping, lip-smacking, sunshiney good times at the many awesome festivals lined up in and around Christchurch this summer. Take a little roadie out to the sun-soaked hills of Waipara this New Year’s and party on down to some of the best drum & bass, dubstep and hip hop musicians at Rolling Meadows. This multi-genre festival will be held at the picturesque Bone Line Winery from Thursday 30 December to Saturday 1 January. There’s nothing to start the year off with a bang like some sweet live tunes, and on Saturday January 15, L.A.B and Shapeshifter are more than bringing the goods. These two powerhouse Kiwi bands are joining forces for an unbeatably epic concert in Hagley Park, and with names like Ladi6, Katchafire and JessB also on the bill, this is a helluva way to welcome 2022....

A bit of everything, please: The Court Theatre’s 2022 season

A bit of everything, please: The Court Theatre’s 2022 season

The Court Theatre’s 2022 season has got something for theatre lovers, culture vultures, belly-laughers and audiences of all descriptions. With an incredible bill of exciting, varied shows, we don’t think you’ll need much convincing to make 2022 your year of theatre. Christchurch’s home of top-quality local and international theatre has got a seriously stacked programme on the cards this year. We’re talking homegrown comedy, popular parodies, bestselling thrillers and empowering musicals. The flagship summer musical, Little Shop of Horrors, tells the story of hapless florist Seymour and his bloodthirsty singing plant. The production runs until January 15 and promises to be larger than life and twice as much fun. An absolute icon follows from February 19 with Flagons and Foxtrots, a nostalgic Kiwi comedy set in 1960s Ohoka. Literature lovers and thriller addicts will want to make time in their schedules from April to June. Austen fans will be tickled pink...

Supa Karts: Super-duper racy looper

Supa Karts: Super-duper racy looper

We’ve got go karts on the mind, so we went and found the biggest and the best in town. Supa Karts are not little fairground bumper karts. These are first-rate engineered machines built for speed and safety. Hitting 35 kilometres per hour, Supa Karts’ grunty adult karts are the fastest in New Zealand, so these are just for the big kids. Options for the younger ones include the junior karts and tandem karts. Throwing a party, end-of-year event or corporate do at Supa Karts is throwing away the expectations of how adults should behave at such affairs. It’s an endorsement of the wild side, an acceptance that your crew want something a little different from a backyard barbecue. You can book in a family race or high-speed adult races, or step things up a notch with a grand prix or team endurance race. In the grand prix, each driver gets a...
