Entertain Me - May 2020

We round up three great reads, shows to bingewatch, new albums to treat your ears to and a couple of decent podcasts to enlighten.

Bingewatching

Fear the Walking Dead

This spinoff from the oh-so-popular programme The Walking Dead follows the story of two families who must band together to survive the undead apocalypse. It’s kind of a prequel that shows the beginning events of the zombie apocalypse pre-Rick. Season five has just dropped on Neon, so if you haven’t seen it before, there’s plenty to catch up on and keep you entertained.

After Life

Starring (and created by) super-funny man Ricky Gervais, this British black comedy-drama will have you hooked from the first episode. It follows Tony, whose life is turned upside-down after his wife dies. It's a funny but at times sad look at his life after these events. Season two dropped on Netflix on April 24, so buckle up for a rollercoaster of emotions – you’ll be laughing, crying and sometimes cringing at his actions.

Mr. Robot

Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) is a cybersecurity engineer who along with Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) and a group of hacktivists known as fsociety start a revolution to change the world. They hack some of the world’s biggest systems to cancel all consumer debt and watch as one of the largest corporations in the world is destroyed. Season four came out in April and is set to be the last. You can check it out on Lightbox.

Listening

AWOLNATION – Angel Miners & The Lightning Riders

Alt-rockers AWOLNATION bring the goods when it comes to killer tunes. There’s a sprinkle of electropop in their music, which can be heard in some of their hits including ‘Sail’ and ‘Run’. Their latest album, Angel Miners & The Lightning Riders, should be on your high rotation from April 24, and if their teaser single ‘The Best’ is anything to go off, you’ll be singing along in no time.

5 Seconds of Summer – C A L M

From across the ditch, Aussie pop-rockers 5 Seconds of Summer (or 5SOS for those in the know) have just released their highly anticipated new album, C A L M – the title is an acronym from the band members’ first names. It opens with the bluesy sound of ‘Red Desert’, which makes a strong first impression. The second single on the album, ‘Teeth’, was included in season three of 13 Reasons Why, and it delivered on the goods, too. Out now and worthy of your undivided attention.

DMA’s – The Glow

These three-piece indie rockers are crushing it at the music game and their third studio album proves to be the best yet. Your ears will be delighted with banger after banger – the first single ‘Life is a Game of Changing’ is already racking up a ton of views online and serves up the band’s signature smooth sound with some chill beats and Tommy O’Dell’s soothing vocals. Comparable to musical icons The Killers, DMA’s music just makes you want to smile and bop around – nice!

Podcasts

13 Minutes to the Moon

Season two of this bangin’ podcast is currently being released and is well worth a listen. The first season is an in-depth retelling of the Apollo 11 mission, when man took one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind. The new season moves on to the Apollo 13 mission, which blasted off less than a year later and recounts the drama, highs and lows of this monumental mission.

Locals Only – Radio Hauraki

We’re lapping this one up as presenters Angie Grey and Tom Harper chat with local music heroes including L.A.B., Midnight Youth frontman Jeremy Redmore and Villainy. At the end of each episode there’s a musical performance that will have you yewing, too.
